Option Y Out is a five-man route concept out of Shotgun Split WR Backfield with 11 personnel. The backside X runs a deep drag across the field while the inline TE (Y) breaks on the option out route working to the boundary sideline, with the slot receiver running a pivot out underneath and the flanker running a corner route off the numbers. The HB releases into a flat route out of the backfield for a checkdown, giving the QB a full field progression from the option out to the flat. This is a man beater at its core since the Y option route lets the TE break away from man coverage leverage, but the layered flat and drag routes also give it enough answers to hold up against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, since single high usually signals man coverage underneath and opens up the Y option route working outside. Watch the flanker's CB leverage before the snap, if he is playing inside shade the corner route behind him becomes a bigger threat in man coverage. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker responsible for the HB flat, if he sits and jumps the route it signals zone coverage and you should work the drag or option route instead. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can take away both the HB flat and the option out break, so be ready to climb the ladder to the drag route sitting in the zone void. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking near the drag route depth, since that is the most common sit-and-read window defenders jump in online play.
Usage Tips
Read the CB and safety alignment over the Y before the snap to decide whether to break the option route out or in, since man coverage with outside leverage should trigger an out break toward the sideline.
Use the HB flat route as your checkdown against blitz-heavy fronts, it comes open fast on nano blitz pressure and limits negative plays.
Hot route the backside drag into a shorter in-cut against zone heavy shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 to shrink the throwing window and speed up the timing.
Pair this play with Snag Z Spot in your play-calling sequence, since both attack similar levels and force the defense to declare man or zone before the snap.
Best called on second and medium or third and short, since the option route and flat combo give the QB a quick answer without needing a deep developing shell.
