Breakdown

HB Power O out of Shotgun Split WR Backfield is a gap scheme run play built to overload one side of the formation with double team blocks up front and a pulling blocker leading through the hole. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down while a puller (guard or fullback surrogate in 11 personnel) wraps around the edge, with the HB taking a lead step before pressing the point of attack behind the double team. This is a run play designed to move the defensive front off the ball, not a play-action look or RPO, and the primary read for the ball carrier is to press the double team, read the puller's block, and cut off his hip depending on how the second level defenders flow.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a stacked box with an extra safety or linebacker walked down, since that alignment is built to beat gap schemes like Power O. Look at defensive tackle alignment. A shaded nose or 3-technique that squeezes down hard on the double team can blow up the pulling lane before the puller gets there. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step. If he scrapes over the top and stays square, he can spill the puller and force the runner back inside into pursuit. User the Mike linebacker or play side outside linebacker if you are on defense, since Power O relies on the second level defender committing before the puller arrives. This run struggles against odd front looks with a two gapping nose tackle and heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the play side A or B gap before the double team can seal.

Usage Tips

Run this play on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the interior run game.

Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a quick pass instead since Power O needs an even numbers advantage to hit.

Watch linebacker depth. If the Mike and Will are sitting shallow and flowing hard to the play side, be ready to cut the run back against the grain since the backside will be thinner.

Pair this play with Inside Zone from the same set to keep the defense guessing between gap and zone blocking schemes, which slows down linebacker read-and-react timing.

Use Slip Screen Lt as a changeup once the defense starts crashing hard on Power O, since the same downhill run action can bait aggressive pursuit into a screen look.
