Breakdown

Outside Zone out of Shotgun Split Pro Near is a run play built around a wide zone blocking scheme with the offensive line flowing laterally toward the play side to create a stretch effect on the defensive front. With 21 personnel giving you an extra lead blocker in the backfield, the fullback or second back can seal the edge or climb to a linebacker, allowing the ball carrier to press the line of scrimmage and read blocks from the tackle out to the edge defender. The primary read progression starts with the playside edge defender to decide bounce, bang, or bend, then works inside to the first wide open running lane created by the double team and reach blocks up front.

Defensive Reads

Read the playside defensive end or outside linebacker first since a hard crash inside means you bounce it outside, while a defender staying wide means you bang it through the B gap. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, stacked linebackers who are shaded to the play side signal a strong run fit call and should push you toward the cutback lane instead of forcing it outside. Identify safety alignment, a single high safety with the strong safety cheating down into the box usually means the defense is loaded to stop outside zone and you should expect fast flow from the second level. User controlled defenders flying downhill too aggressively into the edge create the biggest cutback opportunities, so keep your eyes on any human controlled linebacker or safety who abandons his fit early. This run beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with light boxes and slower flowing linebackers, but it gets shut down by run blitzes that crash extra defenders into the backfield gaps or by defenses using contain calls that keep the edge defender squeezed and patient.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit since the lack of a true fullback lead in some variations means numbers matter more than raw blocking angles.

Use the second back or fullback as your primary blocking key and manually user him into the alley to seal off the first defender flowing outside so your ball carrier has a clean bounce lane.

Motion the extra back or use a jet motion adjustment if the set allows it to identify man versus zone coverage pre-snap, since a defender following the motion confirms man and opens up cutback lanes against overaggressive flow.

Pair this with Same Side Zone and Mtn HB Toss in the same set to keep defenders guessing on zone direction, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their fits and creating cutback wins on Outside Zone specifically.

Best called on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses are more likely to sit in base run fits rather than nickel or dime sub packages that clog the edge with extra defensive backs.
