Mesh Dig Wheels is a man beater out of Shotgun Split Pro Near that layers a classic mesh concept underneath with wheel routes attacking the perimeter and a deep dig crossing the middle of the field. The two backs release into wheel routes off the mesh traffic, creating natural rubs that hang up man defenders while the dig sits down in the void behind linebackers against zone drops. Primary progression starts with the mesh crossers to see if a pick occurs against man coverage, then works to the dig against zone before checking down to either wheel route as a man beater outlet against overaggressive linebackers or blitzing corners.
Watch for Cover 1 or Cover 3 man match shells pre-snap, since the mesh concept is designed to create natural picks against man defenders trailing across the field. If linebackers are sitting at shallow depth with eyes in the backfield, expect them to bite on the mesh traffic and leave the dig route open behind them. Man coverage on the running backs is a green light for the wheel routes to win down the sideline, especially if a linebacker tries to carry the wheel in man coverage and loses outside leverage. Zone defenses with a deep half safety rotating over the top can squeeze the dig route, so key the safety depth and rotation before committing to that throw. Watch for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lanes, since a smart user can jump the mesh routes and undercut the quarterback's first read if the throw is telegraphed.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need a defined route concept that beats both man and zone without needing a run fake. Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight with inside or outside leverage, since the mesh rub is most effective against man match and Cover 1 or Cover 3 man variants. If you see a two high shell with soft corners, prioritize the dig route since zone defenders will often widen with the mesh crossers and open the middle window. Sequence this play with Slant Switch or Slants earlier in a series to condition defenders to jump underneath routes, then hit Mesh Dig Wheels to expose overplayed linebackers and cash in on the wheel route down the sideline.
