Same Side Zone is an outside zone run concept out of Shotgun Split Pro Near with 21 personnel, sending both the HB and FB to the same side of the formation to stack extra blockers on one side of the line. The offensive line flows in unison toward the play side, using zone steps to create cutback lanes while the FB leads through the hole as a lead blocker or kickout defender on the edge. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team at the point of attack, then works to the FB lead block, and finally to the backside cutback lane if the defense overpursues.
Look for the defensive front shifting hard toward the play side call pre-snap, which signals the defense is sniffing out the zone flow. Watch the playside linebacker depth, if he is crashing downhill fast expect a run blitz or gap exchange designed to blow up the zone scheme. Key the safety rotation, a single high safety cheating toward the play side usually means the defense has an extra run defender ready to fill the alley. Identify if the user is spying the FB lead block, a smart user defender will flow to the FB and force the ball back inside where help is stacked. Beware of even fronts with both defensive tackles slanting toward the call side since that alignment can clog the primary lane and force an unwanted cutback into traffic.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this to the side with the numbers advantage since the concept commits extra blockers to one edge.
Use this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, especially when the defense shows two high safeties and soft edge defenders.
User the FB early in the play to control the lead block and manually pick off the first unblocked second level defender rather than trusting the AI engagement.
Pair this with Mtn HB Toss and Mtn PA Fk Toss out of the same set so the defense has to respect both the same side zone flow and the counter action off it.
Run this on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, to stay ahead of the sticks and set up the play-action shots like PA Y Leak and PA Flood later in the drive.
