Inside Zone out of Shotgun Split Pro Near is a base run play built off a two back, one tight end personnel group (21 personnel) that gives the offensive line a double team look at the point of attack. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, working combo blocks at the first level before climbing to linebackers, while the fullback or extra blocker (depending on alignment) seals the edge or leads through the hole. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression starts with the frontside double team and the play side linebacker: the ball carrier presses the hole, reads whether the linebacker flows outside or gets picked off by the combo block, then decides between the bang, bend, or bounce lane based on the fill defender.
Watch for safety rotation before the snap. If both safeties stay deep in a two high shell, the box is likely light and this run has room to work between the tackles. Check linebacker depth and spacing. Linebackers playing tight to the line or shaded toward a bubble are signaling a run blitz, so switch your blocking angle expectations and be ready to bounce outside. Man beater blitz packages with a nine technique crashing hard can disrupt the frontside double team, so key the defensive end alignment to know if the play side combo block will hold up. Zone defenses that flow hard with the offensive line's zone steps can be gashed on the cutback lane, so watch for backside pursuit overcommitting and set up a cutback read. User controlled defenders sitting in the hole (a common lurk technique) will clog the primary running lane, so have your ball carrier ready to bounce or bend based on where that user defender flows.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick shift to check if the defense is playing base 4-3 or a nickel sub package, since lighter boxes open up bigger cutback lanes for this run.
Identify the Mike linebacker depth before the snap. A stacked or crashing Mike signals a run blitz, so be ready to bounce the run outside rather than hitting the A gap.
Pair Inside Zone with Mtn PA Fk Toss and Mtn HB Toss from the same set to keep defenders honest on run fits, since all three plays start with similar zone action but attack different gaps.
On third and short or goal to go, this play is a strong call because the 21 personnel grouping gives you extra blockers at the point of attack against stacked boxes.
If you see a lot of pressure creeping into the box pre-snap, consider audibling to RPO Read F Slide or Read Option from the same set to punish overaggressive linebackers with a pass option.
