Slot Seam from Shotgun Split Offset shows a five man route concept with no protection outlet, so the QB is on a full drop with all eligible receivers pushing vertical. The left outside receiver and the tight slot both run vertical seams up the numbers, the inside slot receiver runs a deep post/skinny post crossing the middle of the field, the right outside receiver runs a matching vertical seam, and the HB releases outside to a flat/angle route as the check down. This is a man beater built to stress the middle of the field with the crossing post while flooding both seams, and the primary read progression is post first for the big play, then work to the seam that isolates on a linebacker or slot corner, with the HB flat as the last resort.
Defensive Reads
Watch the free safety pre-snap, if he cheats toward the slot seam side that tells you the post route on the opposite hash is the priority read. Identify man coverage by checking if defenders are turned and running with receivers at the snap, this play thrives against man because the post naturally picks off trailing defenders on the crossing route. Key the middle linebacker's depth and drop, if he sinks deep into a Tampa 2 style drop the post window will close and you need to bail to a seam instead. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the intermediate middle zone, since that is the biggest threat to the crossing post and can bait a costly interception. Recognize Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells by outside cornerback depth, if corners are playing deep with soft outside leverage the seams will be tightly contested and the post becomes the better answer.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for single high safety look before the snap, since the crossing post is designed to split the safety and attack the void behind the linebackers.
If you see two high shells or Cover 2, hot route the post into a deep dig or have your slot seam receiver settle down for a sit route to beat the underneath zone drop.
Use the HB flat route as your answer against blitz heavy calls, especially nano blitzes, since it releases quickly and gives the QB a check down before pressure arrives.
Pair this play with Slot Cross or Y Shallow Cross in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the vertical seam shell and the quick underneath game, keeping linebackers honest.
Best used on second and long or third and long situations where you need explosive yardage, since every route besides the HB flat is developing deep down the field.
