Breakdown

Mtn Inside Zone is a Shotgun 20 personnel zone run that uses pre-snap motion to shift defenders and identify the run fit before the snap. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, double teaming the first threat at the point of attack and working combo blocks up to the second level linebackers. The primary read for the ball carrier is the frontside double team: press the mesh point, read the play side guard and center combo, and decide between the bend lane or bounce lane based on how the linebackers flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard toward the motion it opens the backside cutback lane. Check the safety alignment before the snap, single high shells give this run play more room to bend since there is only one deep defender to fill. Post-snap, track the play side linebacker key, if he steps up into the double team immediately the defense is selling out to stop inside zone and you should bounce outside. Watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill pre-diagnosing the zone track, that is a sign to cut back against the grain. Look for stacked fronts or extra run defenders in the box, that alignment is built to beat inside zone and signals you should audible to a play-action shot instead.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into showing their run fit or man coverage responsibility before the snap.

Call this out of neutral run downs like first and second and ten to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots later in the set.

Pair this with Mtn PA Flood or PA Poco off the same Split Offset shotgun look so linebackers cannot sit on the run fit without opening up the pass game.

If the defense stacks the box with an extra defender near the line, hot route a receiver to a quick out or slant to punish aggressive run blitzes.

Against odd fronts with a shaded nose, aim your zone track toward the bubble away from the shade to let the double team climb cleanly to the backer.
