Mtn PA HB Swing is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Split Offset that uses a mountain motion and play fake to freeze linebackers before releasing the HB into a swing route out of the backfield. The route combo pairs deep vertical or crossing routes from the receivers with the HB swing as the underneath outlet, making this a zone beater designed to punish linebackers who bite on the run fake and vacate their short zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the deep shots off the play fake, then works down to the HB swing as the checkdown against pressure or when the deep windows are covered.
Key the middle linebacker at the snap, if he steps up hard on the play fake the HB swing lane opens immediately for a quick checkdown gain. Watch safety depth before the snap, two deep safeties in a zone shell usually means the swing route and underneath crossers will be soft against a Cover 2 or Cover 4 look. Identify man coverage by checking if a linebacker or safety shadows the motion man, since man defenders trailing the swing route can be beaten with a quick pump or by attacking the sideline. Beware of user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone, a smart user will sit on the HB swing and jump the route, so have a hot route or secondary progression ready. This play struggles against aggressive man blitzes with no play-action freeze, since blitzing linebackers will not respect the run fake and can close on the swing route before it develops.
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
This play hits hardest against base 4-3 or 4-2-5 zone shells where linebackers step up on the play-action fake, so look for linebacker depth under six yards before the snap.
Hot route the HB swing to a flat route or angle route if you are facing a defense that consistently jumps the swing with a spy or scraping linebacker.
Pair this play with Mtn Inside Zone and Mtn Speed Option in the same personnel and formation to keep the defense honest and set up the play-action fake with real run tendencies.
Call this on early downs, ideally first or second and short to medium yardage, since the defense will be more willing to bite on the run action.
