Breakdown

Mtn PA Flood is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Split Offset (20 personnel) built around a three-level flood concept to one side of the field, with pre-snap motion to help identify man versus zone coverage. The play action draw slows down linebackers and defensive ends, buying time for the flood routes (a deep clear-out, an intermediate out or corner, and a shallow flat route) to stack the sideline vertically. It is primarily a Cover 3 beater since the flood overloads the deep third defender and the flat defender simultaneously, but it can also stress zone drops in Cover 2 or Cover 4. Primary read progression starts deep to short: check the deep clear route first to see if it pulls the corner and safety, then work down to the intermediate route sitting in the void, and finally check the flat route as the checkdown against a hard close from underneath defenders.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment as your green light for Cover 3, since the flood is designed to stretch the deep third defender past his help. Watch the cornerback's depth at the snap. If he sinks with the deep route and the flat defender squats, the intermediate route in the void is your throw. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's drop. If he sprints to the flat immediately, that confirms zone and opens the window behind him for the intermediate route. Beware user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate zone specifically to jump this route, since Mtn PA Flood is a known Cover 3 beater and opponents will often spot drop a linebacker there. Cover 2 with aggressive corner jams can disrupt the flood's timing by squeezing the shallow route release, so have a checkdown plan to the running back if the underneath route gets jammed.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into showing blitz or to confirm man coverage if a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

This play hits best on early downs (1st and 2nd) or 3rd and medium since the flood needs a full route tree to develop, so avoid calling it on 3rd and long against aggressive pass rush teams.

If you diagnose Cover 3 pre-snap based on single high safety alignment, trust the flood full concept and work high to low instead of locking onto one receiver.

Hot route the underneath flat defender's man to a quick out if you see man coverage pre-snap, since the flood naturally beats zone but man coverage requires you to speed up the shallow read.

Pair this play with Mtn Inside Zone or HB Power O earlier in a series to get linebackers and safeties creeping up, then hit Mtn PA Flood off the same motion look to punish overaggressive run fits.
