HB Draw out of Shotgun Split Offset shows the offensive line pass setting at the snap to sell dropback pass before the RB slides through the middle for a delayed hand off. The diagram shows the receivers running vertical stems to hold the corners and safeties deep while the interior line climbs to the second level for the linebackers, clearing the draw lane. This is a pure run play designed to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses, with the primary read being the play side gap first before working backside if the linebackers overpursue up field.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits at depth reading the quarterback's eyes instead of crashing downhill, the draw has room to develop. Watch for a spy or lurk defender staying in the box, that user controlled defender can blow up the draw before it starts. Zone coverages with linebackers dropping into hook zones are the biggest counter to this play since it keeps bodies in the running lanes. Man coverage with linebackers turning their backs to run with slot receivers is where this play thrives, since it removes second level defenders from the box entirely. If the defense shows an overload blitz with extra rushers crashing off the edge, expect the interior to open up wide since those blitzers run themselves out of the play.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs against defenses that consistently bring pressure or send extra blitzers, since the pass set delays the linebackers just enough to spring the RB. Watch for a pre-snap safety rotation into the box, that tells you the defense is loaded to stop the run and you should check to a play-action shot instead. If you see two deep safeties and off man corners at the snap, this is a green light because the linebackers will be reading pass first. Pair this with Mtn PA HB Swing and PA Poco from the same set so the defense has to respect both the draw action and the play-action rollout from identical pre-snap looks. Best used on 2nd or 3rd and short to medium, especially after showing dropback pass shots earlier in the drive to condition the defense to sit back.
