Mtn Z Spot is a Shotgun spot concept built off the Flanker Close WK set that combines a mountain (vertical stretch) route package with a classic spot combination to attack zone coverage. The Z receiver runs the spot route underneath while a mountain route climbs the seam behind it, creating a natural high low read against zone drops, while flat and curl elements occupy the underneath defenders to open passing lanes. This is primarily a zone beater built to stress cover 2 and cover 3 flat defenders, with the primary read progression starting at the spot route on the Z, then working up to the mountain route if the underneath defender sits or the flat defender jumps the shorter route.
Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, a single high safety usually means cover 3 or man while two high safeties suggest cover 2 or cover 4 zone drops Watch the curl to flat defender at the snap since a sit and read technique signals zone while immediate outside leverage on the Z receiver signals man coverage Post-snap, track the mountain route defender to see if a linebacker or safety picks up the vertical climb, a late reaction here means the seam window is open This play struggles against disciplined cover 2 with a hard flat defender who stays home and a deep half safety who can rob the mountain route, so avoid calling it into that look repeatedly Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone since they can jump the spot route if the quarterback stares it down too long, so keep the eyes progressing through the read
Use this play on second and medium to long third down when the defense shows a two high shell that suggests zone drops underneath
Key the flat defender and curl to flat defender pre-snap since Mtn Z Spot lives or dies on how they react to the spot route
If you see man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the outside corners, hot route the spot receiver into a quick out or slant to beat the leverage
