Mtn Mesh Dig is a man beater built around a classic mesh concept paired with a deep dig breaking over the middle. Two underneath receivers cross tight to create natural rubs and separation against man coverage, while the dig sits down in the intermediate zone behind the mesh traffic to attack off-man or zone defenders who bite on the crossers. The primary read progression starts with the mesh combo underneath, working shallow to deep, and if the mesh routes are covered, work back to the dig sitting behind the linebackers over the middle of the field.
Identify man coverage pre-snap by checking corner alignment and safety rotation, since mesh concepts are designed to exploit man leverage with natural picks. Watch for a linebacker or safety sitting in a hook or curl zone in the middle of the field, since that defender can undercut the dig route if he reads it early. If the offense shows this look, expect the crossers to stack tight underneath, so user a linebacker to shadow the mesh point and disrupt the rub before receivers cross. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a rangy deep defender can bracket the dig if the safety reads the quarterback's eyes, so bait the throw by looking off the dig before committing. Blitz packages with man coverage behind them are risky against this play since the mesh action creates instant separation, so spy or delay the blitz to give underneath defenders time to reroute the crossers.
Use this play on second or third and medium when you need a reliable man beater to move the chains.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like cornerbacks pressed on your receivers or a single high safety rotating late, since the mesh traffic thrives against man leverage.
If the defense shows two high safeties with soft corners, hot route the mesh receivers to break their angles later or peek the dig earlier since zone defenders will sink under the crossers.
