The blocking scheme keeps the RB in to chip or check release protection, giving the quarterback time to let the crossing route develop against man leverage. The primary read starts with the H cross working from the strong side across the field, then progresses to the flanker's route on the boundary if the crosser is taken away by a trailing defender or a wall off zone defender sitting in the underneath window.
Check the middle of the field pre snap for a single high safety, which usually signals man coverage underneath and opens up the crossing route as the first read. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop into the crossing lane means a user controlled defender is sitting on the route, forcing you to hit your outlet or move to the flanker read. Identify any slot or nickel defender showing blitz alignment before the snap, since a nano blitz off the edge can collapse the pocket before the H cross has time to develop. Cover 2 with hard corners can jump the crossing route late if the underneath defenders trail well, so look to layer the throw with proper ball placement between the levels of the defense. Against Cover 3, the crosser often runs into a sinking linebacker or a rat in the middle, which should push your progression quickly to the flanker or a checkdown rather than forcing the primary read.
Look for man coverage indicators pre snap such as corners lined up tight on the receivers with no safety help rotating over the top, since the H cross thrives when it can create natural rub separation against man defenders.
If the defense shows two high safeties before the snap, expect the crosser to run into a linebacker's zone drop, so be ready to reset your eyes to the flanker's route on the backside as your secondary progression.
Use hot routes to convert the RB into a quick flare or check release against known blitz heavy teams, giving yourself an outlet if the crossing route gets clogged by a spy or a blitzing linebacker.
