Cross Z Corner is a man beater built around a corner route from the Z receiver combined with a crossing route that clears underneath space and occupies linebackers. The crossing route creates natural traffic to slow down man defenders trailing the corner route, while the backside routes give the quarterback a quick outlet if the corner route is jumped. The primary read progression starts with the Z corner route in the boundary against single high looks, then works down to the crosser as the checkdown against tight man coverage or disguised pressure.
Check the free safety alignment before the snap, a rolled up single high safety signals man coverage which opens up the corner route as the primary target. Watch the flat defender or nickel corner at the snap, if they widen with the Z receiver the crosser will have room underneath. Identify Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties since the corner route has to fit into a tighter window against the deep half defender. Keep an eye on user controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field, they can jump the crossing route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Watch for disguised blitzes off the edge since the protection on this concept can be exposed to a nano blitz if the offensive line does not identify the extra rusher.
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the corner route wins big against Cover 1 and Cover 3 when the corner is playing outside leverage.
Use motion or a quick pre-snap glance to identify if the defense is showing man coverage, then key on the Z receiver release to see if the corner route stacks the defender.
Hot route the crossing route into a deeper option against Cover 2 shells where the flat defender can undercut the shallow crosser.
Call this on second and medium to second and long situations where you have room to take a shot on the corner route without abandoning the drive on an incompletion.
