Inside Zone out of Shotgun Flanker Close WK is a base run play built on a zone blocking scheme where the offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, sealing gaps and climbing to the second level to wall off linebackers. The RB reads the frontside combo blocks and picks his lane based on how the defensive tackles and linebackers flow, with a cutback lane available if the backside defensive end and linebacker overpursue. This is a true run play with no play-action or RPO element, so the primary read progression is the running back's aiming point: press the frontside A or B gap first, then bounce or cut back based on linebacker fit and safety run support.
Pre-snap, identify if the middle linebacker is stacked over the center or shaded to a gap, since a stacked backer with two high safeties usually signals a lighter box that favors the runner. Watch cornerback depth and alignment, if corners are pressed and safeties are rotating down into the box, the defense is likely selling out to stop the run and you may want to check to a pass instead. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line, bounce the run outside, if they sit and read, stick to the interior lanes. Beware of user controlled defenders flashing down into the A or B gap right at the snap, which is a common way human defenders blow up Inside Zone before the blocks can develop. This run struggles against heavy fronts with an extra defender in the box or aggressive gap shooting blitzes, but it thrives against base 4-3 or 3-4 looks with two high shells and passive linebacker flow.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into six or fewer defenders in the tackle box, since stacked fronts with an extra linebacker or safety cheating down will clog every lane. Use motion or a quick glance to identify if the defense is in a two high shell or single high, since two high shells typically mean lighter boxes and more room for the zone scheme to develop. If you see a heavy blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap, consider hot routing your TE to check block or sliding protection to the play side to account for extra rushers. Pair Inside Zone with PA Y Cross or Mtn Mesh Dig from this same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the play-action shot off similar formation and personnel. On early downs like first and ten, lean on Inside Zone to stay ahead of the sticks, then use the play-action tags in this set once the defense starts keying run.
