Breakdown

Smash Seam out of Empty Trey Stack lines up three receivers to the trips side with a bunched two-man stack on the left. The trips side runs a classic smash concept: the outside receiver runs a quick out toward the sideline, the inside stack receiver pushes vertically up the seam, and the middle receiver at the numbers runs a deep corner route breaking away from the seam. On the backside, the isolated receiver runs a deep post that bends toward the middle of the field while the underneath receiver from the stack runs a drag across the field. This is an empty protection look with no blocking help, so it is a pure pass play designed to attack zone coverage, particularly Cover 2, by stretching the flat defender and safety vertically with the smash and seam combo. The primary read starts with the seam route against Cover 2 or Cover 3 middle defenders, then works to the corner route over the top and the out route underneath if the coverage rotates away.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties sit at ten to twelve yards with no rotation you are likely looking at Cover 2 which this play is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the out route the seam window opens up for an easy throw before the safety can close. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender dropping into the seam, a shallow zone drop there signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 and the seam throw becomes tighter, so shift to the corner route instead. Be alert for a lurking safety cheating toward the seam route pre-snap, that is a sign of a user controlled defender jumping the concept, which means the backside post or drag becomes the better answer. Man coverage with press corners on the outside receivers is the biggest threat to this play since there is no run action or extra protection, so identify blitz packages quickly and use your hot route adjustment to get the ball out fast.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties split evenly this play is built to punish that Cover 2 shell with the seam and corner stretch. Use the seam route as your first read against zone defenses since it occupies the middle linebacker and forces the safety to choose between the seam and the corner route behind him. If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the drag or out into a quick option to protect against empty pressure since there is no extra blocker. Pair this play with Y Stick or Double Stick in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses guessing between quick underneath throws and the vertical smash seam shot. Best used on second or third and medium when you have time to let the corner and seam routes develop, avoid calling it on third and short since the deepest routes take time to clear the zone.
