Defensive Reads
Bail coverage or heavy safety help over the top on the post side signals zone, which slows the wheel developing since a flat defender can stay home on the inside receiver. Man coverage with the corner cheating inside pre-snap is a green light for the post/wheel combo since the wheel defender has no help once he opens his hips to the post fake. Watch for a linebacker or slot defender shadowing the inside stack receiver at the snap, as a disciplined defender who does not bite on the post fake will sit on the wheel and take it away. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with deep zone drops clog the post route window and force the quarterback to check down to the drag or flat routes underneath. Blitz packages with no deep help are a major risk to the offense since the empty backfield leaves zero blockers, so watch for pressure off the edge that forces an early throw before the wheel route fully develops.

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on the stack side before snapping this play, since the wheel route is designed to torch any defender who bites on the post fake.
Use motion or a hot route on the drag route to turn it into an instant answer against blitz-heavy fronts since you have zero protection with the empty backfield.
Pair this with Levels or Y Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick horizontal reads and the deep shot, forcing linebackers to respect multiple route depths.
Call this on early downs or 2nd and medium when you can afford a double move to hit, since the wheel route takes time to develop and a sack or coverage bust is costly on 3rd and long.
Trust the post to open the wheel man, but always have your eyes on the drag as a checkdown if the safety sits deep and takes away both verticals.
