Spacing out of Shotgun Empty Bunch spreads five receivers wide with no back in the backfield, stretching the field horizontally at three levels. The bunch side runs a stick style combo (flat, out, and corner route stacked vertically) while the backside receiver breaks outside on a quick out, and the lone receiver just off the bunch runs a shallow drag underneath. This is a classic zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells by settling receivers into the soft spots of the zone, with the quick out and flat routes serving as the primary read against sink linebackers and the corner route working as the eventual answer over the top if the zone widens.
Defensive Reads
Presnap check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the bunch side, since a single high safety and off man corners signal Cover 3 which this play is designed to attack. Watch the flat defender immediately after the snap, if he sinks with the corner route you have the out route sitting wide open underneath. Key the middle linebacker's zone drop, if he widens to cover the shallow drag the middle of the field opens for a delayed throw. This play struggles against Cover 4 with aggressive corner jams and disciplined zone drops that squeeze the flat and out combo, as well as against any man blitz package that gets pressure before the routes can settle. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking underneath the drag route, since that is the most common way defenses take away the easy completion on Spacing.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify if the defense shows a two high or three deep shell since Spacing is built to exploit the soft zone landmarks in Cover 3 and Cover 4. Your first read is the flat and out combo on the bunch side since those routes settle immediately against zone drops and give you a rhythm throw. If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the backside out into a quick slant or speed out to give yourself a better man beater since Spacing loses some effectiveness against tight man leverage. Use this play on second and short to medium distance situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than blitz. Pair Spacing with Y Curl or Z Spot from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick horizontal stretches and vertical breaking routes, forcing linebackers to widen their drops and open up throwing lanes underneath.
