Z Spot is a Cover 3 beater built around the classic Spot concept on the closed side, with a corner route from the flexed Y (TE) attacking the deep outside void, a spot/hitch settling underneath, and a swing route out of the backfield clearing the flat. To the open side, both receivers run outside-breaking routes stacked at different depths to occupy the boundary defenders and hold the safety. The blocking is a five-man pass protection with the RB releasing into his swing route after checking the edge, giving the QB a clean progression from the corner route down to the spot and swing underneath.
Key the flat defender first since Z Spot is designed to isolate him between the spot route and the swing route out of the backfield. Watch for a single-high safety rotating late, which signals Cover 3 and confirms the corner route should have room to work the deep outside third. If the linebacker drops immediately into the spot route zone, the QB should progress quickly to the swing route since the underneath window will be tight. Man coverage with press corners can shut this down if the corner route gets jammed at the line, so look for a user-controlled defender jumping the route early. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers put pressure on the tight protection, so identify extra rushers pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out on the spot or swing quickly.
Pre-snap, look for single-high shells or Cover 3 zone drops since the corner and spot combo is designed to attack the seam and flat voids that Cover 3 leaves open.
If the defense shows Cover 2 or man coverage, hot route the corner route runner into a deep out or fade to avoid the flat defender sitting on the spot route.
Use this play on second or third and medium since the spot route sits down quickly and gives the QB a safe checkdown if the corner route is blanketed.
Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Read from the same set to keep defenses guessing between vertical shots and underneath spacing concepts.
Motion the backfield RB before the snap to identify man versus zone based on whether a defender follows him across the formation.
