Four Verticals out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex Offset sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with both outside receivers on go routes up the numbers, the slot receiver releasing up the seam, and the flexed TE running a bender route up the middle of the field. The HB stays in to pick up the blitz, giving the QB a clean pocket to work through the four vertical stems. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater that stresses deep zone defenders by flooding all four vertical lanes at once, with the primary read starting on the seam or bender route against single high looks before working outside to the numbers routes against two deep safety shells.
Read the safety alignment pre-snap, two high safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 while one high safety signals Cover 1 or Cover 3. Key the flexed TE at the snap since his release tells you if the defense is playing man or zone based on how quickly a linebacker or safety mirrors his stem. Watch for a user-controlled deep safety sitting in the middle of the field, known as a lurk defender, since he can jump the seam or bender route and bait the QB into a pick six. Identify Cover 4 quarters looks by checking if the corners bail deep immediately at the snap, since that coverage can shut down the outside verts and force the QB into tight window throws down the seams. Recognize blitz packages by counting box defenders pre-snap, if the defense brings five or six rushers the HB check-release will not hold up long enough for the routes to develop.
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties versus one high safety since that dictates whether you attack the seams or the numbers first.
Against Cover 2, target the seam and bender routes in the throwing lane between the corner and safety before the safety can rotate over the top.
Against Cover 3, work the numbers routes to isolate the deep third defenders and throw with anticipation before the corner gets depth.
Use hot routes to convert the flexed TE into a shorter option like a drag or spot route if you diagnose a heavy blitz look, since the HB is your only extra protector.
Pair this play with Curl Combo or Y Shallow Cross in the same set to keep the defense honest, since both concepts share the same formation shell and force linebackers to respect the pass on early downs.
