RPO Read Dbl Screen out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex Offset gives the quarterback a true dual screen read with a run fake mixed in. The diagram shows a bubble screen concept to the left where the receiver works back to the flat behind a lead blocker, while the two receivers on the right run a stacked screen with the outside man releasing and the inside man blocking then leaking out, and the running back is not shown carrying so this reps as the pass side of the RPO with the offensive line showing run blocking flow. Primary read is left screen to right screen, with the quarterback keying second level flow: if linebackers crash the box or fly to one side, throw the screen away from that flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch for cornerbacks playing off coverage on both outside receivers since that soft cushion signals a defense vulnerable to screens. If linebackers are stacked tight to the line presnap, expect them to crash on the run fake, which opens both bubble and stack screen lanes. Diagnose blitz packages by checking edge defender depth: if both edges are crashing hard upfield, the screens will hit big because there is no one left to contain the perimeter. A defense that sits its linebackers in shallow hook or curl zones and does not bite on the run fake is the best counter to this play since those defenders can jump both screens. Man coverage with off corners and no underneath help is the ideal shell to attack, while zone with disciplined linebacker eyes on backfield flow shuts this RPO down.
Usage Tips
Presnap, count the box defenders and check if the defense is showing man or zone before deciding which screen side to favor.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with linebackers creeping to one side, throw immediately to the screen away from the pressure since blockers will have a numbers advantage.
Use this play on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the sticks since both screens are low risk, high reward against overaggressive fronts.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same set so defenses respect the run fake and bite harder on linebacker flow, opening up the screen lanes.
Avoid throwing into the screen side that has extra defenders sitting in shallow zone or spying, since both screens rely on leverage and space rather than beating a defender straight up.
