Breakdown
PA Read out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex Offset shows a play-action shot off run fakes, with four verticals-style stems on the left and a boundary out and go combo to the right. The two left receivers push straight up the seam and sideline for deep shots against man coverage, while the flexed TE and outside receiver on the right run an out and up combo (angle route breaking flat then vertical go) designed to stress a corner playing outside leverage. Primary progression starts with the vertical shot to the far receiver, then works to the deep out breaking to the corner route, and checks down to the flat if the safety shell rolls over the top.
Defensive Reads
Check safety depth before the snap since two deep safeties sitting at 10 to 12 yards signal zone coverage that funnels throws to the corner route. Watch the flat defender's reaction to the run fake, because if he crashes down on the play fake it opens the underneath out route immediately. Man coverage on the outside receivers with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness this play attacks, especially against Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitzes. If the defense shows Cover 2 with corners sitting on the flat, expect the corner route to work into the honey hole between the safety and corner. Beware of a disguised Cover 4 or Cover 6 shell rotating late, since it can take away both the seam shots and the deep out, forcing a checkdown read.
Usage Tips
Look for two high safeties pre-snap since this play thrives against off man and split safety zone shells that bite on the run fake.
Use the play-action hard count to draw linebackers up before the snap, opening throwing lanes for the seam and corner routes.
Hot route the flat route to a deeper option if you see Cover 3 sink underneath, since the underneath defender can jump the shallow out.
Pair this call with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same set to sell the run fake and keep linebackers honest before dialing up PA Read.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses expect run looks based on personnel and formation tendencies.
