Breakdown

Angle Smash out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex Offset gives you a true Cover 2 beater with a smash concept on the boundary and an angle route out of the backfield. The outside receiver runs a corner route stretching the deep half while the inside slot sits down on a hitch underneath, forming the classic high low smash read on the two man side. On the backside, the running back releases into an angle route out of the backfield working away from pursuit, giving you an outlet against man coverage. Primary progression starts with the corner route against the deep safety, works down to the smash hitch if the cornerback sinks, and comes back to the angle route out of the backfield as the man beater checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the two receiver side, since Cover 2 with soft corners invites the corner throw while press man alignment signals you should target the angle route instead. Post-snap, key the flat defender or cornerback on the smash side, if he sinks with the corner route the hitch underneath is wide open for an easy completion. Watch for a lurking linebacker sitting in the throwing lane to the angle route, a smart defender in Cover 3 or Cover 4 can jump that release if he reads it quickly. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with capable deep half safeties who can stay on top of the corner route and clog the smash window. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge can disrupt the timing on the corner route, so recognize overload blitz alignments pre-snap and be ready to check down to the angle route immediately.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is rotating to a two high or single high shell before the snap since the corner route only wins if the deep defender stays on the hash. Against Cover 2 look, throw the corner route on a rope before the flat defender can widen and the safety can get over the top. Against man coverage, work the angle route out of the backfield immediately since the running back creates natural separation on any linebacker matched up. Use this play on early downs to set up Curl Combo or Y Shallow Cross out of the same formation, since the pre-snap look mirrors those concepts and forces the defense to respect both the vertical shot and the underneath crossers. On third and medium, hot route the backside single receiver into a quick out if you need a faster access point against blitz looks.
