Breakdown

Y Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Doubles Y-Flex Offset is a classic man beater built around a deep shallow crosser that drags all the way across the formation underneath the second level. Both outside receivers push vertical and break to corner routes at the top of their stems, the inside slot runs a quick out to hold the flat defender, and the flexed TE (or slot receiver in the diagram) works a short angle route underneath before the shallow crosser clears, giving the quarterback a layered read from the drag to either corner route. The blocking picture shows a clean pocket set with no visible blitz help, so this is a straight drop back pass designed to exploit man coverage leverage with the crosser and stress zone defenders horizontally if they sit back.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify if the cornerbacks are playing tight man technique since the shallow crosser is designed to rub off traffic and separate from man defenders in the middle of the field. Key the middle linebacker depth and spacing, since a shallow drop into the crosser's lane can jump the route and blow up the primary read before it develops. Watch for single high safety rotation, which signals Cover 1 or Cover 3 and opens up the corner routes on the perimeter as the higher value read. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, sit on the underneath crosser and angle route since the corners will be well covered by deep zone defenders. If the defense shows a lurking user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow crosser's path, check down to the flat or bail out to the opposite corner route rather than forcing the drag.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or third and medium when you expect man coverage since the shallow crosser is designed to lose defenders in traffic against man leverage.

Read the corner routes first against single high safety looks, since the deep breaking outs on both sides can win one on one against Cover 1 or Cover 3 cornerbacks playing tight technique.

If you see two high safeties presnap, work the shallow crosser and the underneath angle route immediately since those zone beaters settle into soft spots against Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells.

Hot route the backside corner route into a comeback if the corner is playing off coverage to create an easier completion window on the boundary.

Pair this call with Curl Combo or Angle Smash from the same set so you can dial up a similar presnap picture but attack shallow zones or beat man coverage with a different concept, keeping the defense guessing on which route combo is coming.
