Stick Spacing Switch is a quick-game Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater run out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Trips with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the backside receiver running an isolated comeback to the boundary while the trips bunch runs a switch release into stick concept combos: one route settles into a shallow stick/curl, another works an out to the flat, and the outside receiver runs a corner route stacking the coverage vertically. The primary read progression starts backside on the comeback if the corner sits soft, then works to the trips side reading the stick-flat combo underneath before climbing to the corner route if a defender bites down on the shorter stuff.
Watch the flat defender post snap, if he sinks with the corner route the stick route underneath will be wide open against Cover 3 sink zones. If the cornerback on the switch release trips side jumps the shallow route immediately, expect man coverage or a Cover 1 look and switch to the backside comeback as your primary. A robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field can undercut the stick route, so read his eyes before committing to that throw. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers will remove underneath defenders, so the switch release combo becomes even more dangerous since fewer bodies are left to cover the stick and flat. Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting at ten to twelve yards will suffocate the corner route, so bail out to the stick or comeback route instead of forcing it deep.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap because two deep safeties confirms Cover 4 and tells you to trust the stick and flat combo underneath rather than forcing the corner route into a deep half defender.
If the corner shows single high presnap, work the backside comeback first since Cover 3 corners will often play off and the switch release can create natural separation against zone drops.
Use hot routes to convert the flat route into a quick out if you see a linebacker sitting flat footed in the throwing lane, especially on third and short.
Pair this play with Mtn Return Mesh Spot Rail or Slot Slant earlier in a series so the defense starts jumping the quick stick routes, then hit the corner route window once safeties cheat down.
Best called on third and medium or in two minute drill situations where the stick concept picks up the sticks quickly against zone shells.
