Mtn China X-Post is a deep-shot passing concept out of Bunch Y-Trips that isolates a backside receiver on a straight go route while overloading the bunch side with crossing and post traffic. The X receiver runs an outside release go route on an island, the bunch releases with one man on a deep post from the middle of the trips, one on a shallow drag pulling across the field underneath, and the last bunch receiver working an out breaking pivot at the sticks. This is a man beater built to punish single high looks and press coverage, with the primary read starting on the deep post attacking the safety before working down to the drag and out as underneath answers.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows single high or two high, since this play thrives against single high man coverage where the post has room to work behind the linebackers. Watch the cornerback over the X receiver, if he presses at the line without safety help over the top, the go route becomes a live shot play. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker and any user lurk defender sitting in the deep middle, they can rob the post route and turn it into a pick six if the quarterback stares it down. Look for a Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell with a robber sitting under the post, that alignment shuts down the primary read and forces the drag or out as the only outlet. Blitz-heavy defenses with man coverage behind them get exposed by the drag route settling into vacated zones, so watch for hot blitz indicators like linebackers creeping into the box or a safety rotating down pre-snap.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one high safety shaded toward the bunch side, take the shot to the backside go route on the X for a potential one on one win. Against two high shells, work the deep post first since it splits the safeties and forces a hole shot window over the middle. Use the drag as your check down and rhythm throw versus zone blitzes or when the post and go are blanketed, it clears out fast against man coverage that widens with motion. Pair this play with Mtn Fly HB Go earlier in a series to condition the defense into respecting vertical shots, then come back to Mtn China X-Post to hit the post or drag once safeties start creeping up. Best called on second and long or first down shot situations where you can afford a low completion rate throw for a big chunk gain.
