Breakdown

Mtn Fly HB Go is a vertical shot play out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Trips designed to stretch the field with three vertical or breaking-vertical routes plus a boundary out. From the bunch, the outside receiver runs a fly straight up the sideline while the tight end releases underneath into a corner route working to the same side. The inside bunch receiver runs a skinny post up the middle, and the backside X runs a quick out to the flat, with the offensive line in a five-man pass protection to hold up for the deep shots. This is a man beater built to isolate the corner route against man coverage using the natural rub from the bunch, with the fly as the home run shot if the safety bites on the corner or post.

Defensive Reads

Bunch formations with three receivers stacked tight are a signal to check for man coverage matchups, especially if a linebacker or slot corner lines up over the inside receiver. Watch the free safety pre-snap, if he shades to the fly side expect a two-high shell trying to take away the deep ball and the post route becomes the primary answer underneath. Post-snap, key the flat defender and any underneath zone droppers, if they widen to cover the out route from the X receiver that confirms zone coverage and the seam between levels opens for the corner route. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge are dangerous here since the five-man protection has no extra chip help, get the ball out quickly to the flat route if pressure shows early. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with deep safeties sitting on the numbers will squeeze the fly route, so the quarterback should read the corner and post combination underneath rather than forcing the deep shot into coverage.

Usage Tips

Use this on second or third and long when the defense has shown a willingness to play man coverage or single high safety looks.

Check pre-snap for a cornerback lined up tight on the outside fly receiver, that alignment signals man coverage and opens the fly as your first shot read.

If the safety cheats over the top of the fly, work the corner route from the tight end since the bunch rub creates natural separation against man defenders.

Hot route the backside X out route into a comeback or hitch versus soft zone coverage if the corner sits deep and takes away the quick throw.

Pair this play with Mtn China X-Post or Mtn Return Corner Portland in the same set so the defense has to respect both the vertical shot and the intermediate crossing routes, keeping linebackers and safeties honest.
