Breakdown

Mtn Drive Double Outs runs from a Bunch Y-Trips shotgun set and shows two out breaking routes stacked underneath a deep dig/crosser combo. The bunch receiver runs a shallow out to the flat while the outside receiver from the bunch pushes vertical then breaks hard outside on a deeper out, and the backside single receiver runs a deep drive route across the field on top of a second in-breaking route from the near bunch man, creating a high low read on one side of the field with the drive crosser occupying the middle of the field on the other. This is a cover 4 beater built to attack the flat to deep out ladder while the drive concept punishes zone defenders who squeeze the middle. Progression starts with the deep out, works down to the underneath out in the flat, then comes back to the drive route if the coverage rolls away from the trips side.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify whether the defense is showing cover 4 or cover 2, this play is designed to exploit the flat to deep out ladder that cover 4 corners struggle to pattern match. Watch the flat defender after the snap, if he sinks too deep on the underneath out you have an easy throw to the shallow out for a first down. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender on the drive route, if he widens to help on the trips side the drive route will sit down in a soft spot for an easy completion. Man coverage with inside leverage on the outside receiver will struggle to carry the deep out, look for the corner to trail underneath and throw with anticipation before he can recover. Cover 3 with a hard flat corner squatting on the shallow out can bait a quarterback into a bad read, if you see the corner sitting low pre snap be ready to go directly to the deep out or drive route instead.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep this is your cover 4 beater and the double out combo will stress the corner and flat defender on the trips side.

Use motion out of the bunch to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and should prioritize the deep out against a trailing corner.

Hot route the backside single receiver into a quick slant if you are facing pressure looks, this gives you a fast answer against blitz packages without needing a full progression read.

Pair this play with Mtn Fly HB Go or Mtn China X-Post in the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and the underneath out combo, this sequencing punishes defenders who sit on the shorter routes after seeing this concept once.

Best called on second or third and medium, the flat out route gives an easy checkdown for the sticks while the deeper out and drive route offer explosive play potential against overaggressive zone drops.
