Mtn RPO Peek Flats is a run pass option out of Shotgun Bunch TE Str that gives the quarterback a give read on an inside run while peeking a bubble style flat concept to the boundary. Off the diagram, the running back carries the ball to the left on a jet style handoff track while the QB reads the flat defender flowing to the yellow flat route breaking underneath, and the backside receiver runs a vertical release up the sideline. This is a numbers based RPO built to attack light boxes and overaggressive flat defenders, not a traditional man or zone beater since the read is triggered by defender flow rather than coverage shell.
Pre-snap identify whether the defense is stacking the box or showing two high safeties, since a light box tells the offense to trust the run every time. Watch the flat defender and slot corner leverage: if they crash inside on run flow, the flat route to the yellow receiver will be wide open behind them. User controlled linebackers who key the mesh point aggressively can blow this play up by staying home and playing both the give and the flat simultaneously. Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with a hard flowing linebacker are vulnerable since the flat conversion beats the underneath defenders before they can recover. Man coverage with no help underneath is the toughest shell against this concept because the flat defender can stay attached in man and the RPO read never opens cleanly.
Check the box count before the snap and if the defense has six or fewer in the box, trust the run track and let the RB work left behind the flow. If a linebacker or slot defender crashes down hard on run action, pull the ball and hit the flat route for an easy underneath completion. Use this play on early downs in run heavy personnel to keep defenses honest and set up explosive shot plays later in the drive. Pair this call with Mtn Verts Shallow Cross or PA Double Post later in a series once the defense starts sitting on the flat throw. Hot route the backside vertical receiver into a comeback against teams that play deep half safeties to prevent the corner from squatting on the sideline shot.
