Spot Zig Slot Corner is a Cover 3 beater out of Shotgun Bunch TE Str that stresses the flat to deep third relationship on the play side. The diagram shows a corner route climbing from the bunch up the sideline, a zig route sitting underneath breaking flat away from the corner as an outlet, and a backside receiver running a deep out to the opposite sideline to hold that corner. The primary read progression is corner to zig, working outside in: throw the corner if the deep third defender bites on the flat, and check down to the zig sitting underneath if the corner route is capped over the top.
Defensive Reads
Key the deep third defender on the play side snap to snap since his leverage tells you whether he is sinking to the corner route or staying flat footed to jump the zig. Watch for late safety rotation after the snap, especially a single high safety sliding hard toward the boundary, which signals Cover 3 and opens up the corner route behind him. If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap and holds that shell after the snap, expect the corner window to shrink fast, so bail out to the zig or the backside deep out. Look for a user linebacker spying the underneath zig lane, since that is the most common way competitive defenders take away the checkdown and force a risky throw into the deep third. Man coverage with press alignment on the bunch receivers is a green light to attack the corner route immediately, since the route stem is designed to separate vertically before the defender can recover.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since this play is built to attack Cover 3 rotation where the deep third defender has to choose between the corner route and the underneath flat threat.
If the slot corner route is not open, hot route the zig into a quicker breaking option against tight man coverage to speed up the timing against blitz looks.
This play hits best on second and medium to second and long or third and short, where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure.
Pair this with Boomerang Curl Flats or Boomerang Flood H-Sneak Copy from the same Bunch TE Str set so the defense sees similar bunch alignment and route stems but has to defend different route combos, keeping linebackers and safeties guessing on rotation.
Against aggressive user linebackers who jump underneath routes, take the top off with the corner route immediately since the zig read will be sitting in a crowded shallow zone.
