Boomerang HB Angle lines up from Shotgun Bunch TE Str with the bunch stacked to the strong side and the HB releasing out of the backfield on an angle route underneath. Off the snap the outside bunch receiver runs a deep vertical up the sideline, the middle bunch receiver works an in-cut across the field, and the third bunch receiver breaks outside on a short out, while the HB angles from the backfield to the flat opposite the bunch for a built-in checkdown. This is a man beater at its core: the HB angle route is designed to create separation against linebackers in man coverage, and the crossing in-route stresses zone defenders who have to sink and cover the underneath window. The primary read starts with the HB angle if the defense shows man or blitz, then progresses to the in-cut route, and finally to the vertical shot up the sideline if the defense bites on the underneath stuff.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker assigned to the HB pre-snap: if he walks out to match the bunch or shows blitz intent, the angle route will be wide open in man coverage. Key the safety depth before the snap; if both safeties sit deep in a two-high shell, the underneath in-cut and angle route have room to work before help arrives. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender who sits in the shallow zone or lurks near the angle route, since a squatting linebacker can jump the HB route and turn this into a turnover. Cover 3 with a hard-charging blitz off the edge can beat this if the HB angle route is picked off at the mesh point, so identify pressure early and get the ball out on rhythm. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the vertical route is the biggest exploit since the outside bunch receiver can win deep once the defender is occupied with the underneath traffic.
Usage Tips
Motion the bunch pre-snap to confirm man versus zone: if a defender follows the motion man across the formation, expect man coverage and prioritize the HB angle route immediately after the snap.
Use the HB angle as your answer against blitz-heavy looks since it releases quickly to the flat and gives you a built-in checkdown against pressure.
If the safeties show a two-high shell, work the in-cut route over the middle before the safety can rotate down, since that window opens fastest against split safety zone coverages.
Pair this play with Boomerang Flood H-Sneak and Boomerang Curl Flats in the same set so the defense sees the same bunch alignment but has to defend different route combinations, keeping linebackers and safeties guessing on the underneath and flat areas.
Best used on early downs or third and short since the HB angle and short out routes convert quickly, but if you see single high man coverage look to take the vertical shot up the sideline for an explosive play.
