Breakdown

Boomerang Curl Flats is a bunch-based zone beater out of Shotgun Bunch TE Str that uses pre-snap motion to distort zone landmarks before the snap. The concept combines a curl route sitting down over the middle with dual flat routes bracketing the outside, creating a natural high-low stretch on flat defenders and hook zone linebackers. The primary read starts with the flat route to the motion side, working back to the curl if the flat defender sinks, and finishes with the backside flat as a checkdown against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the boomerang route the curl behind him should come open immediately in the soft spot of zone coverage. Key the hook or curl-flat linebacker's depth pre-snap, shallow linebacker alignment signals underneath zone that will squeeze the curl window and force you to check down to the flat instead. Man coverage shells that shadow the motion man across formation are a green light to attack the curl with a speed cut since the defender will be in a trail position with no help over the top. Be wary of Cover 2 shells where the corner sits in the flat and the safety rotates down, this can jump the flat route early and bait a quick interception if you force the throw. Identify blitz packages pre-snap by counting box defenders, if the defense brings extra rushers off the edge get the ball out quickly to the nearest flat route since the curl route takes longer to develop and is vulnerable to a fast pass rush.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation it is almost always man coverage and you should hot route the curl into a corner or deep out to beat the trail technique.

Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, trust the flat to curl progression since the flat defender cannot cover both the boomerang route and the curl sitting behind him.

This play excels on second and medium or third and short since the flat and curl combo gives you multiple underneath completions without needing to push the ball deep.

Pair this play with Boomerang HB Angle or Mtn RPO Peek Flats in your play-calling sequence, running Boomerang Curl Flats first to bait zone defenders into sinking on the curl, then hit the HB Angle out of the backfield once linebackers start jumping the flat.

If the defense shows a hard blitz look pre-snap, consider sliding protection or hot routing the backside flat into a quick out to give yourself a fast release valve against pressure.
