Post Shot out of Pistol Weak I Wing shows a vertical shot concept paired with two clear out routes underneath. The X receiver runs a deep post from the backside, splitting the safeties, while the two receivers on the strong side run shallow drag routes across the field to hold linebackers and clear the intermediate zone for the post. This is a man beater built to isolate the post route against single high safety looks or a lurking linebacker who bites on the drags, and the primary read progression starts with the deep post before working down to the underneath drags if the shot is not there.
Defensive Reads
Watch the strong safety pre-snap since a two high shell with both safeties deep signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, which crowds the post route. Key the middle linebacker at the snap because if he sprints out to the drag routes he opens a throwing lane straight down the middle for the post. User the deep safety to the post side and rob the route if the offense shows this same personnel and formation on back to back plays. Look for corners playing outside leverage in man coverage since that alignment invites the post to break clean toward the middle of the field. Disguise a two deep shell late and roll to single high after the snap to bait the quarterback into throwing the post into a trap coverage.
Usage Tips
Take a pre-snap look at the deep safety alignment before the snap since this play lives or dies on whether you get one high or two high shells.
If you see single high man coverage or a Cover 3 with the corner playing off, trust the post and let it rip on time to the X receiver.
Use the two drag routes as your checkdown or hot route conversion tool against zone heavy defenses that flood the deep middle with two safeties.
Pair this shot play with HB Power O or Counter Weak earlier in a series to get defenses cheating up on run support before you dial up the post shot for a big play.
Save this call for third and long or second and long situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone coverage and give up the post over the top.
