PA Boot Slide is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Weak I Wing that boots the quarterback to his right off a fake handoff, giving him a run pass option feel with a fullback slide protection in front of him. The two outside receivers run deep corner breaking routes on both sides of the field to stretch the defense vertically, while the slide route underneath the offensive line acts as the quarterback's checkdown and outlet on the boot. Primary read progression starts with the deep out breaking route on the boot side, then works down to the slide route underneath if the corner route is covered, making this a play-action shot play designed to beat aggressive man coverage and single high safety looks.
Watch for a single high safety pre-snap since that alignment signals man coverage or Cover 3, both of which are vulnerable to the deep corner routes on the boot. If you see two safeties deep pre-snap, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 which shrinks the throwing windows on the outside routes and forces you to the slide route underneath. Key the flow of the linebackers after the snap since aggressive run fits toward the fullback slide fake open up the underlying slide route for an easy completion. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the boot lane or dropping into a lurk position on the slide route, as this is the most common way defenses shut this play down. Man coverage with an overhang defender to the boot side is the toughest matchup, so if you see press man alignment on the outside receiver, consider hitting the underneath slide route earlier in the progression instead of pushing it downfield.
Call this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are still respecting the run out of Weak I Wing personnel. Check pre-snap for single high safety shells such as Cover 1 or Cover 3 since the boot action and deep corner routes exploit defenders who bite on the run fake. If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, be ready to check down quickly to the slide route since your deep shots will be less open against split safety coverage. Pair this play with HB Power O and HB Gut earlier in a series to sell the run fake harder and get linebackers and safeties flowing downhill before you hit them with this boot concept. Use manual motion or user the quarterback on the rollout to extend the play and buy time for the far side corner route to break open against man coverage.
