Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Pistol U Off Stack is an outside zone run play that sends the entire offensive line laterally toward the play side, stretching the defensive front horizontally before the HB decides to bounce, bang, or bend the run. The diagram shows the two receivers stacked wide left running off the defense while the tight end and offensive line flow together to the play side, with the HB taking a lateral path behind the line before pressing the edge, indicated by the red arrow. This is a zone run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the play side edge defender, then works to the play side linebacker flow to determine whether to cut the run upfield or continue bouncing outside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard inside, which signals a scrape exchange designed to contain the stretch bounce. Check safety depth before the snap, since a safety cheating down into the box often means the defense is selling out to stop the edge run. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step: if he flows hard with the zone action, the HB should look to cut the run back against the grain. Nano blitzes off the edge can blow up the stretch scheme before it develops, so identify overload fronts and be ready to check into a quick pass or audible. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with fast flowing linebackers tend to shut down the bounce, forcing the back to cut inside where the blocking numbers are less favorable.

Usage Tips

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the stretch scheme relies on numbers advantage at the point of attack.

Use pre-snap motion or a receiver shift to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, since stacked receivers can reveal man coverage through DB bump alignment.

Hot route the stacked receivers into quick outs or slants if the defense shows blitz, giving the QB a fast throw option to punish overcommitted fronts.

Pair HB Stretch with Inside Zone Split to keep linebackers guessing between zone run direction, forcing false steps that open cutback lanes.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Boot or PA Flood Out later in the sequence off similar zone action.
