Inside Zone Split lines up out of Pistol U Off Stack with 12 personnel, showing two receivers stacked wide left running vertical releases while the rest of the formation is bunched tight to the play side for the zone run. The HB takes the handoff and reads the frontside double team, working downhill through the A or B gap based on the flow of the defensive line and second level flow of the linebackers. This is a straight zone run play designed to gash light boxes and expose overpursuing linebackers, with the primary read being the frontside double team block and the backside cutback lane if the defense flows too hard to the play side.
Watch the defensive tackles and nose, if they get sealed on the double team the frontside cutback lane will collapse and the HB should stick to the called gap. Key the middle linebacker's first step, if he flows hard playside on the snap the backside cutback becomes the higher value gap. Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, a single high look often means an extra run defender in the box so expect more resistance up front. Watch for a user-controlled defender crashing down from the stacked receiver side, this can signal an overload blitz that this zone run is designed to exploit with a quick cutback. Beware stacked fronts with linebackers playing downhill at the snap, this play struggles against gap-sound defenses that stay disciplined and do not overcommit to zone flow.
Check the box count before the snap, if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this is a green light run against most fronts.
Look at the linebacker depth and flow, if they crash hard to the play side call an audible cutback or bounce read since the backside lane will open up.
Use the two stacked receivers to bait the safety into rotating over the top, which thins out the run support and creates cleaner run lanes for the HB.
Pair this with HB Slip Screen and HB Stretch to keep the defense guessing between inside zone and outside zone tempo, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Best called on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Boot or PA Flood Out off the same look later in the drive.
