PA Boot out of Pistol U Off Stack (12 personnel) is a play-action bootleg that pulls the QB to the right edge behind the flow of the fake. The yellow route from the stack breaks vertically then bends into a deep dig across the middle, working as a zone beater against off coverage or split safeties. The red route runs a shallow drift underneath into the flat area, giving the QB a quick outlet if the pocket collapses, while the white receiver runs a short out breaking toward the sideline as the checkdown, and the blue route clears out wide to hold the corner. Primary progression starts with the deep dig, works down to the sideline out, then bails to the flat drift as the emergency valve on the boot.
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, since that shell invites the dig route into the void behind linebackers who bite on run action. Key the boot side linebacker or edge defender for contain discipline. If he stays home and does not chase the fake, the QB rollout throwing lanes shrink fast. Identify man coverage by watching the corner over the blue clearout route. If he turns and runs with him instead of sitting, the sideline out and flat drift both have room. Look for a user linebacker spying the QB or dropping into the shallow drift lane, since that lurk threat is the biggest post-snap danger to the underneath routes. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with fast flowing safeties are the toughest coverage against this concept, since the deep dig has no window and the boot flow gets squeezed by outside leverage defenders.
Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when you have already established inside zone or HB Zone to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Two high safeties invite the deep dig behind the linebacker level, while single high tells you to lean on the sideline out and flat drift.
Roll the pocket with the boot action and read outside in: dig first, then out, then flat drift as your last resort against contain pressure.
Pair this with HB Slip Screen or PA Flood Out in the same set to keep defenses honest on run fits, since the mirrored action makes it hard for defenders to jump the fake.
Against man coverage, hot route the flat drift receiver into a quicker option if you see press corners jumping the boot flow, since man defenders trailing across the field is where this play hurts most.
