DBL Post attacks the middle of the field with two vertical post routes stacked from the left side, the outside receiver breaking to a deep post while the inside receiver runs a quick angle route underneath before settling as a shallow option. On the right side the flanker runs a wheel-style route out of the backfield area, releasing outside and turning upfield to stretch the boundary. This is a man beater and Cover 2 beater designed to overload one half of the field, with the primary read starting on the deep post for a big play before working down to the underneath angle route and finally the wheel route as a checkdown against a soft zone shell.
Defensive Reads
Read the safeties at the snap, if both drop deep and wide you are likely facing Cover 2 or Cover 4 which this play is built to beat with the double post stem. Watch the flat defender on the wheel route side, if he sinks with the underneath route the wheel route can leak open behind him for a big gain. Key the corner over the stacked receivers, a corner that jumps the underneath angle route leaves the deep post wide open behind him in man coverage. Beware disguised Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a deep middle robber, since a single high safety can rob the post route and turn this into a costly interception. Watch for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the wheel route side often has minimal blocking help and can be exposed to pressure before routes develop.
Usage Tips
Look presnap for two high safeties shifted toward the stack side, since that signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and opens up the double post concept behind the corners.
Take the deep post shot first if the safety bites on the underneath angle route, especially against Cover 2 where the post splits the safeties.
If the defense shows man coverage with no help over the top, hot route the inside angle route into a shallow drag to give yourself a quick answer against blitz looks.
Use DBL Post on early downs or in two minute situations when you need an explosive gain, then pair it with PA Boot or PA Corner Dig on the next snap to keep the defense honest on run action.
Sequence this play after HB Zone or Inside Zone Split to bait linebackers into run fits, then hit the double post concept when the safeties creep down.
