Defensive Reads
Watch for offenses that attack the seams between your two deep safeties, since Cover 2 Man is vulnerable to any route that splits the safeties before they can converge. Pre-snap, check the cornerback alignment and safety depth to confirm the defense is actually showing two-deep instead of rotating to a single-high shell after the snap. Post-snap, key on any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lanes, since disciplined offenses will try to rub your man defenders off natural picks in the route concept. This shell shuts down deep shots and double moves because of the safety help, but it can get exposed by option routes and running back releases out of the backfield if your underneath defenders lose leverage. Look for aggressive route runners who stack their man defender quickly, which forces your safety to make a difficult angle read and close space before the ball arrives.
Usage Tips
Use Cover 2 Man on early downs when you expect play-action or a shot play, since the two deep safeties take away the double move and the go route while your underneath defenders stay glued in man.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running twins or bunch formations that can create natural picks against man coverage, and shade your safeties toward the side with the most vertical threats.
Combine this call with Tampa 2 in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on your safety depth, since both plays look similar pre-snap but Tampa 2 adds a robber underneath.
Hot route your slot corner into a press alignment on shifty slot receivers to disrupt their route timing before it develops, since Cover 2 Man leaves your underneath defenders on an island until the safety help arrives.
Use this on third and medium to short situations where you want to take away quick game and rely on your man defenders to make a play on the ball while safeties clean up anything that breaks free deep.
