LB De Twist 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz look out of the Nickel Load Mug front. Both linebackers show blitz at the mug points pre-snap then execute a line stunt, crossing paths through the interior gaps to disguise where the pressure is actually coming from while dropping the back seven into a three deep, four under zone shell behind it. The deep thirds are covered by the two outside corners and a deep middle defender, with underneath zone defenders sitting at the flats and hook/curl areas to take away quick throws. This is a zone beater against the run and a pressure disguise against the pass, so the primary read is identifying whether the offense sends a hot route or checks it down before the twist gets home, then transitioning to the deep third defenders if the quarterback holds the ball.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the offensive line splits and running back alignment to see if they are sliding protection toward the mug linebackers, which tells you the twist will likely get picked up cleanly. Watch for the quarterback checking to a hot route immediately after the snap, since that usually means he read the blitz disguise and is looking to attack the vacated underneath zone. Post-snap, key on any user-controlled defender dropping late into a shallow crossing route, since this line stunt is vulnerable to quick slants and drags that beat the zone before it fully sets. This play shuts down teams that rely on deep isolation routes or vertical shots, since the three deep defenders have help over the top, but it can be exploited by tight end seam routes if the middle zone defender is late getting to depth. If you see empty backfield or quick game concepts pre-snap, expect this call to get beat before the twist can affect the pocket.
Usage Tips
Show this look on early downs to bait quarterbacks into thinking it is a standard mug pressure package before revealing the twist. Use the disguised blitz to influence the QB into a quick throw, then rely on your underneath zone defenders to close on curl and flat routes. Pair this with Nickel Blitz 3 or Hot Blitz 3 from the same set so opponents cannot distinguish your standard pressure from your twist look pre-snap. Best called on second and long or third and medium when offenses are likely to take a shot downfield, since the deep three shell covers over the top. Avoid calling this against empty formations or spread sets that flood the underneath zones faster than your twisting linebackers can get depth.
