This is a Cover 0 blitz designed to win with pressure before the quarterback can climb the pocket, so the primary read is simple: send the interior blitzers first to collapse the pocket while the outside rushers contain, forcing a quick throw into tight man coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are crashed near the line or rotated tight to the box, that confirms the zero blitz look and tells you the quarterback likely has a hot route or sight adjustment ready. Watch the running back's release; if he stays in to chip block or check release, your blitz timing will be delayed and you need to adjust your rush lanes accordingly. This beats slow-developing man beater concepts and any play that requires the quarterback to hold the ball more than two seconds, since the pressure home run hitters will get home before routes uncover. It gets exploited by quick game concepts, hot routes to the flat, and any play with a built-in sight adjustment against blitz, since there is no safety valve or deep zone defender to clean up a blown coverage matchup. Post-snap, key the offensive line's protection slide; if they slide toward your overload side, look for the running back or tight end to leak out uncovered on the opposite side as the hot read.
Usage Tips
Call this on obvious passing downs like third and long or in two minute situations when the offense is likely to max protect or empty out, since Cover 0 leaves no safety valve if a blitzer gets picked up clean.
Check the pre-snap protection before the snap: if the offense shows six or seven blockers, consider audibling to a coverage-heavy call from this set like Cover 1 LB Blitz instead to avoid a coverage bust.
Use your user-controlled defender on the most dangerous route runner or the running back out of the backfield, since your zero coverage has no deep help if your man coverage assignment loses leverage.
Mix this in after showing Cover 3 Match or Cover 6 pre-snap looks earlier in the drive so the quarterback cannot key blitz timing off your defensive alignment.
Pair this with LB Blitz 0 and Nickel Blitz 1 in the same play-calling sequence to keep the same pressure shell disguised while varying which gap or receiver gets the extra rusher.
