Breakdown

Hot Blitz 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Nickel Load Mug package that sends five rushers while dropping into a three deep, three under shell behind it. Both outside cornerbacks bail into deep thirds while the deep safety rotates over the top to cover the middle third, leaving three underneath zone defenders (two flat/curl droppers and one shallow spot dropper) to wall off the short and intermediate throwing lanes. Up front the diagram shows a five man rush including an overload look off one edge, designed to collapse the pocket quickly and force the quarterback into a rushed decision before the underneath defenders can be exploited. This is a zone blitz built to beat man beater route combos and quick game concepts that rely on the quarterback holding the ball, with the primary read for the offense being the flat to intermediate crossers since the deep thirds are numbers disadvantaged against vertical stacks.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are shaded to one side or showing two high, the deep middle third may be vulnerable to a post or seam route once the single high safety rotates. Watch for empty or four verticals concepts, since the deep thirds can be stressed if all three cornerbacks are isolated against superior route runners on double moves. Post-snap, key the running back and tight end releases immediately, since screens and quick flare routes into the void vacated by the blitzing linebacker are the primary counter to this zone pressure. If the quarterback checks down instantly to the flat, user the underneath defender assigned to that zone rather than staying home, since the zone blitz sacrifices some flat coverage integrity for pass rush speed. Beware of hot route sight adjustments on slants and quick outs against the blitzing side, since the vacated zone from the rushing linebacker is the first target for a prepared quarterback.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when the offense is likely to run quick game or RPO concepts that need extra time to develop.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense has trips or bunch to one side and consider shifting the Mug alignment to overload that side before the snap.

Use the five man rush to speed up the quarterback's clock, then user the closest underneath defender to the boundary to jump the shallow crosser or flat route since that is the first place quarterbacks look versus pressure.

Disguise this look by mixing it with Cover 3 Match or Cover 3 Sky from the same set pre-snap so the offense cannot key the blitz off alignment alone.

Sequence this call after showing Nickel Blitz 1 or Nickel Blitz 2 earlier in the game so quarterbacks hesitate on their pre-snap protection reads and second guess hot route adjustments.
