Hot Blitz 3 out of the 3-3 Swap Dbl Mug set brings a disguised double mug look at the line before rotating into a five or six man pressure package with Cover 3 shell behind it. This is a blitz play, not a route concept, designed to collapse the pocket quickly while the deep third defenders and underneath zone droppers clean up anything thrown in a hurry. The primary read for the defense caller is to trigger the blitz timing off the snap count, then trust the zone drops to squeeze any hot throws over the middle or quick outs to the flat.
Watch for the running back leaking out to the flat immediately after the snap since that is the first outlet against pressure and your underneath zone defender needs to jump that route. If the offense checks into a hot route with the slot receiver running a quick out or slant, your Cover 3 zone droppers need to sink and wall off that throwing lane before the blitz gets home. Identify empty backfield or trips bunch formations pre-snap since those spread looks generate faster hot throws that can beat the blitz before it develops. Post-snap, key the offensive line's slide protection, if they slide toward the mugged side, redirect your blitzer to the opposite edge for a cleaner rush lane. This call gets exposed by max protect play-action rollouts where extra blockers pick up every rusher, so avoid firing this into obvious play-action tendencies on early downs.
Show the double mug alignment pre-snap to bait the quarterback into thinking heavy interior pressure is coming, then let the disguise rotate into the actual blitz path at the snap.
Use this on third and medium to third and long situations where quarterbacks are more likely to hold the ball an extra beat looking for a sticks conversion, giving your rush time to close.
User the closest mugged linebacker to the strongside and spy or delay him half a second before committing to the blitz path if you suspect a quick game or screen.
Pair this call with SS Sim 2 or Blitz Loop Sim 3 earlier in a series so opponents cannot key on the double mug look as an automatic tell for all out pressure.
Avoid firing this against empty backfield spread sets unless you have a confirmed hot route sim behind it, since extra hots can pick up the extra rusher and leave the zone shell exposed underneath.
