1 DT LB Loop is a defensive blitz package out of the Nickel 3-3 Swap Dbl Mug set designed to confuse the offensive line with a stunt between the defensive tackle and the looping linebacker. The 1 DT loops wide while the linebacker crashes through the vacated interior gap, creating a delayed pressure look that punishes offenses that set protection based on initial pre-snap alignment. This is a run stop and pass rush blitz rather than a coverage beater, and the primary read for the defense is the offensive line's slide protection, if the line slides away from the loop, the untouched rusher wins clean off the edge or through the vacated gap.
Key the center's helmet at the snap, if he blocks down immediately the loop should hit clean since the guard is left to handle two rushers. Watch for shotgun spread formations with quick slot releases, these attack the loop before the stunt fully develops and force an early throw read instead. If the offense shows max protect with a tight end or running back staying in, abort the loop mentally and rely on the base three man rush plus coverage behind it. Look for screen action to the side of the loop, since the linebacker vacating his gap can be a liability against a well timed screen or RPO. Identify play-action rollouts away from the loop side, the quarterback can buy time by rolling opposite the stunt before the loop rusher completes his path.
Disguise this call by showing the Dbl Mug look pre-snap so the quarterback cannot immediately identify which gap the pressure is coming from.
Use this on early downs against gap or man schemes since the loop exploits linemen who fire out on assignment rather than reading the stunt.
Pair this with SS Sim 2 or Blitz Loop Sim 3 in the same set to keep the offense guessing between a straight blitz and a sim pressure look with the same pre-snap picture.
Avoid calling this against empty formations or quick game concepts since the loop takes an extra half second to develop and can be beaten by fast rhythm throws.
On third and long, user the looping linebacker manually to control the timing of the stunt and take away the quarterback's escape lane if he tries to step up.
