The primary read progression for the defense is to identify the number two receiver to the Sky safety's side first, then work back to the deep middle third if the quarterback tries to push the ball vertically.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the number two receiver alignment on the Sky side since that receiver dictates where the safety rotates and where the underneath hole opens up. Watch for stacked or bunch receiver sets, since the crossing routes shown in the diagram are designed to attack the seam between the underneath zones and the deep thirds. Post-snap, key the mugged linebackers immediately to confirm whether they are blitzing or dropping into zone, since offenses that guess wrong here get exposed underneath. This shell struggles against quick out routes to the flat and hard play-action rollouts that attack the space vacated by the rotating Sky safety. It holds up well against vertical shots and four verticals concepts since the deep thirds are sound, but user awareness is critical to prevent easy completions on the inside crossers.
Usage Tips
Disguise the Sky rotation by mugging both linebackers at the line to bait the quarterback into thinking a blitz is coming, then drop them into their hook or curl zones at the snap.
Use this call on early downs or in obvious run situations where offenses expect a blitz look, since the pre-snap picture creates hesitation before the quarterback recognizes the zone drop.
Combine this with Blitz Loop 0 and Blitz Loop 3 from the same set so the offense cannot key on the mugged look and has to respect the actual blitz threat every time.
User the Sky safety and spy the shallow crossers, since that is where this coverage is most vulnerable if left uncontrolled.
