The diagram shows a stunting front with defensive linemen looping and crossing paths at the snap to confuse blocking assignments, while the secondary plays man coverage across the board with no deep safety help. This is a pure pressure play designed to overload the box, and the primary read is the offensive line identification: watch which gap the loopers vacate and which blitzer replaces them to find the free rusher.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are within six yards of the line of scrimmage, the offense likely diagnosed the zero blitz and will attack it with a hot route or quick out. Watch the running back alignment since he becomes the emergency outlet against the blitz and often is the only real answer for the quarterback. Post snap, key the offensive line's slide protection direction because it tells you where the free rusher lane is opening from the stunt. This play gets shut down by max protect schemes with two backs staying in, since it removes any coverage sinkholes created by the blitzers vacating zones. It dominates against five or six man protection schemes and empty formations where every receiver is singled up with no help defenders.
Usage Tips
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you need a negative play or a forced incompletion since every receiver is locked in man coverage with no safety help. Check pre-snap for the offense sliding protection toward your mugged linebackers, and if they do, expect the running back to leak out into the vacated area so have a spy plan in your head. Use the line stunt to your advantage by delaying the snap count since the looping linemen need a clean get off to cross unblocked. Pair this with Cover 1 LB Blitz from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key blitz reads from safety depth alone. Avoid calling this on obvious passing downs against mobile quarterbacks since the zero coverage behind the blitz has zero margin for a broken contain.
