Breakdown

Blitz Loop 3 is a five-man pressure package out of the 3-3 Load Dbl Mug in Nickel that drops into Cover 3 behind the rush. Both A-gap Mug linebackers loop off the edge with a line stunt through the interior, crossing the natural gaps to confuse blocking assignments while the defensive line occupies the box. Behind the pressure, the deep thirds are covered by the two outside cornerbacks and a deep safety, with underneath zone defenders (including a curl-flat player on each side and a shallow hole defender) rounding out the zone shell. This is a blitz-first, zone-behind concept designed to disrupt the pocket and disguise where the extra rusher comes from.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a hot route ready to attack the vacated A-gaps, since the looping linebackers create natural throwing lanes for a split second. Watch running back alignment and pass protection numbers, because if the offense has enough blockers to pick up the stunt, the rush will get neutralized and the coverage has to hold up longer than usual. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes to the flat and curl zones, since the underneath defenders are responsible for taking away quick outs and drag routes while the rush develops. This look is vulnerable to quick game and screens if the stunt is diagnosed pre-snap, so watch for bubble screens or slip screens designed to attack the space the looping linebackers vacate. It shuts down man beater concepts and deep drop back passing games well because the zone shell behind the blitz keeps three defenders deep, taking away go routes and post routes over the top.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and medium when the offense is likely to hold the ball for a deeper route concept, since the line stunt takes a beat to develop and needs time to affect the pocket.

Pre-snap, check for man motion or a single-back set that suggests the offense will run quick game or screens, since the loop stunt can be gashed by hot throws before the rushers cross.

User the looping linebacker on the strongside if the offense shows pass, then spy the running back out of the backfield to shut down check-down options that beat zone blitzes.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match earlier in a series so the offense sees the same shell without the blitz, then dial up Blitz Loop 3 to catch them off guard on a similar down and distance.

Avoid calling this against empty formations or trips looks unless you shift the zone drops, since the underneath defenders can get outnumbered on the perimeter.
