Nickel Sim 2 is a simulated pressure call out of the 2-4 Dbl Mug look in Nickel personnel that shows a mugged look at the line before bailing into a two deep zone shell. Both deep defenders drop to the corners at the snap to play Cover 2 halves, while the underneath defenders spin into shallow zone drops (two hook/curl droppers and a flat defender to the right), with the edge defender to the left crashing down as a run force or delayed rush threat. This is a zone beater disguise concept designed to bait quarterbacks into thinking pressure is coming pre snap, only to drop extra defenders into coverage and force a hitch or check down read underneath.
Read the two deep defenders at the snap, if they bail immediately to the numbers you are in a Cover 2 shell and should squeeze the underneath throwing lanes. Watch the flat zone defender on the right side, he sits underneath the flat and jumps any quick out or flat route on that side. Key the edge defender on the left, if he crashes down at the snap it signals either a run fit or a delayed contain rush rather than a true blitz. This beats man beater concepts and quick game since the sim disguise confuses the quarterback into thinking he has a blitz beater when he actually faces a two deep zone underneath. This can be exploited by play-action passes or deep shots down the seam since the underneath zone defenders are focused on short drops and the two deep safeties can be attacked with vertical stems if the QB holds the ball long enough.
Show this look on early downs when you want to disguise a two deep shell as a blitz to bait the QB into throwing into the flat or a hot route immediately.
Pre snap, hold off on manually spinning the safeties since the sim disguise already shows pressure and the coverage rotation happens automatically at the snap.
Use this in run and pass mixed situations since the crashing edge defender can hold up outside zone or stretch runs while the underneath zone still holds shallow crossers.
Pair this with SS Dog 3 or Buck Zone Blitz from the same set so opponents cannot key on the mugged look and guess whether it is real pressure or a sim disguise.
Best used on second and medium or third and short where offenses expect real pressure and will try to get the ball out fast to beat a blitz that never fully arrives.
