The two outside underneath defenders sink to their landmarks and squeeze the flats while the buzz defender rotates down into the intermediate middle hole, and the deep thirds are covered by three defenders sitting over the top. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure with a five-under, three-deep shell, and the primary read progression starts with confirming both linebackers get through unblocked off the edge before working to the buzz defender flowing under any crossing routes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment to confirm the three-deep shell is intact before the ball is snapped. Post-snap, key the buzz defender's drop, since he is responsible for taking away any deep crossers or dig routes attacking the middle of the field. This look beats man beater route combos and shallow cross concepts because the buzz defender sits right in that throwing lane. It is vulnerable to quick outside throws to the flat if the underneath defenders overcommit inside before the snap, so watch your flat leverage against smoke screens and quick outs. Diagnose empty or spread formations early since four verticals or seam shots can stress the three-deep shell if the deep defenders bite on shorter routes underneath them.
Usage Tips
Show the double mug look pre-snap to bait the quarterback into thinking it is a max pressure look, then let the buzz defender read the quarterback's eyes for anything working across the middle.
Use this on early downs or third and medium when offenses are more likely to run quick game or shallow crossers, since the buzz defender erases that space underneath.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky and SS Dog 3 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key linebacker depth or edge alignment to diagnose the blitz.
Motion check the offense before the snap since both edge rushers are locked into their lanes, and any late shift can leave a numbers advantage on one side if you do not adjust your run fits.
Spy or contain the far flat defender against mobile quarterbacks, because the double edge pressure can open escape lanes if the rush does not stay disciplined.
